DETAILED JOB DESCRIPTION

Supports and participates in the production of quality laboratory services to ensure accurate results and timely turnaround of results. Responsible for the production of technical testing and reporting processes in the Core Laboratory area assigned. This includes assuring that processes within the assigned area help the Lab meet department goals including turnaround time and error reduction. Is responsible for daily activities related to assigned area and joint responsibility with supervisor and manager of common core activities including phlebotomy and accessioning as needed. Provides training and orientation for the area as needed. Maintains proficiency in all areas of the assigned department. Maintains certification through a recognized laboratory accreditation organization.

Coordinates daily activities with the Laboratory Manager to provide the most efficient and seamless delivery of laboratory services. Is responsible for oversight of daily activities in assigned areas including staff assigned to area. Provides communication to all staff on a routine basis. Provides oversight of student and new staff activities in the assigned areas.

Demonstrates and leads compliance with the standard work practices and policies. Conducts technical work practices and procedures in compliance with laboratory regulatory agencies, and assures compliance with CAP standards, DNV standards, and CLIA regulations. Participates in CAP reviews and may function as a CAP Inspection team member if requested. Leads and performs work in accordance with departmental work policies, including FOCUS-PDCA and Lean. May be requested to rotate to other areas to provide the most efficient scheduling and coverage.

Demonstrates positive customer service relations with all department and Medical Center encounters. Exhibits and maintains positive, professional rapport with patients, families, hospital personnel, and physicians. Facilitates a positive environment with co-workers in the Laboratory. Promotes team building and respect for all co-workers within the assigned areas.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Certification: Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS or IMLS), categorical or specialist technologist (such as Chemistry, Cytotechnologist, Histotechnologist, Microbiology, Blood Banking, Molecular Biology) by American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT), or Certified Point of Care Professional (CPP) by American Association for Clinical Chemistry (AACC), or Clinical Laboratory Technologist by former Dept of Health Education & Welfare (HEW/HHS).

Bachelor's degree. Individuals who have qualified as a medical technologist by February 28, 1992 may substitute an associate's degree.

Three (3) years of MLS experience.
