Agracetus, located in Middleton, Wisconsin, was founded in 1981 and has been a part of Monsanto since 1996. It is an R&D facility that specializes in crop plant transformation, molecular biology, and the production of therapeutic proteins in plants. The Agracetus campus is located on 4.5 acres and contains 100,000 square feet of research space. The campus houses ten research laboratories and a 35,000 square foot greenhouse complex. In addition to being Monsanto's center of excellence for soybean research, the campus also has efforts in corn and cotton transformation. There are also efforts in the nutritional improvement of plants for human and animal consumption. Through Monsanto's Integrated Protein Technologies (IPT) unit, researchers develop methods for using plants as factories for the production of high-value therapeutic proteins. Agracetus has approximately 100 full-time staff members. The most prominent fields of expertise include molecular biology, agronomy, plant physiology, and genetics.
